The Indian Experience

The British Imperial Force consisted of many nationalities from all over the world. The Indian Experience tells you the story of the Indian Corps during the first months of the Great War in the Ypres and Neuve Chapelle area.

Leaving Ypres we drive southwards to Hollebeke to see the battlefields where the Indian troops withstood the German attacks in October and November 1914. It was here that Khudadad Khan was awarded the first Indian VC for his actions. Next we continue to Wieltje and the area of the first German gas attack in April 1915. It was the Indian Corps who had to recapture some of the essential defensive line just north of Ypres. From Wieltje we turn to Ouderdom near Poperinge, where the Indian troops were encamped. Just across the border the Indian Memorial at Neuve Chapelle is of course a must see!

> 4 hour tour: € 50 p.p.

No entrance fees to be paid in this tour.

Ideally the tour starts from Ypres at either 9 am or 1.30 pm. Other departure places are also possible but might shorten the tour, depending on the time needed to get to the battlefield sites.
